Why is Ningaloo Reef special

Ningaloo Reef can be accessed just footsteps from the beach – something very few coral reefs offer. Enjoy the most transparent turquoise water imaginable in the Ningaloo Reef Lagoon and pristine coral gardens at the do-it-yourself snorkeling sites of Exmouth's Cape Range National Park or Coral Bay where you can swim with hundreds of colorful tropical reef fish species.

The World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef is internationally recognized as one of the planet’s last great ocean paradises. Located in Western Australia region, in the towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay, the 300 kilometers long Ningaloo Reef is the largest fringing coral reef in the world.

In 2011, the World Heritage Committee decided to inscribe the Ningaloo Coast on the World Heritage List, acknowledging it as one of the outstanding natural places in the world.

The Ningaloo Coast was inscribed on the World Heritage List for its natural beauty and biological diversity. Amongst other criteria, it was included on the World Heritage list in particular in recognition of its:

  • Aesthetically striking coastal and terrestrial environment of Ningaloo Reef adjacent to Cape Range.

  • Lush and colorful underwater scenery and its contrast with the arid and rugged land.

  • Annual aggregation of whale sharks, one of the largest in the world.

  • Important aggregations of other fish species and marine mammals.

  • High marine diversity, including an unusual diversity of marine turtle species.
